Forgot to mention: Web414 June Meet Up

Tonight is my presentation at the Web414 June Meet Up – I blogged about it earlier this month. They had announced (and I had announced here on my own blog) that the Meet Up would be held at Bucketworks in Milwaukee. Since then, Southeastern Wisconsin has experienced some major storms and flooding and Bucketworks had their share of the flooding, so bad, that they had to shut down for business in order to repair. The Meet Up has been moved to: MSOE (Milwaukee School of Engineering) Rosenberg Hall 1235 N. Milwaukee St, room 201 It starts at 7pm and I […]

Web414 – Milwaukee's Web Community

I’m really excited to have been asked to speak at a local web development/design group in Milwaukee this June. The group is called Web414 – Milwaukee’s Web Development Community, and from what I understand – it’s a group of Drupal fans, mostly – – though Mike tells me that they all appreciate WordPress. (Or maybe he just said that to make me feel more at ease??). The group is made up of mostly developers, with a smattering of designers here and there in the crowd and when I talked to Mike about what topic would be best for this crowd […]

WordPress Famous 5-Minute Install Clarification

When someone mentions the famous ‘5-minute install’ in reference to installing the WordPress software – either in a blog post or, say… in a book… they are referring to the time it takes to install the software itself. They are not referring to the time it takes to: Investigate computer systems and do a price comparison on different systems Decide on the exact computer you want to buy Purchase the computer Set up the computer Install FTP software Purchase and set up your domain name registration Obtain a web hosting provider Figure out how to use FTP in conjunction with […]

WordPress 2.5 Released & My Needed Fix for Image Upload on servers with Mod_Security

WordPress 2.5 was finally released today, after much anticipation. Matt Mullenweg did a comprehensive post on the WordPress Blog about this new update and the changes to 2.5. I won’t go through all the major changes – – just read Matt’s post.. he’s done a nice job of explaining a few things and includes a video on some the enhancements. The WordPress.Org website has undergone a brand new re-design that coordinates with the new design of the WordPress Dashboard, as well. Some very nice improvements in the design you’ll notice when you upgrade to WordPress 2.5 – – it’s a […]

Open Call for Talented People

Building websites and WordPress blogs ain’t what it used to be, I’m telling ya! As development on several platforms expands and progress – our clients are seeing some great new uses of these platforms all over the place! Not everyone is happy with the typical blog framework anyore of content on the left, sidebar on the right with the usual Recent Posts, Categories, Archives, Blogroll…and navigation menu on the top. That is sooooo…. early 2000, isn’t it? We’re looking at a new generation of clients who are seeing phenomenal things happening in the areas of CMS developent and progress adn […]

WordPress Girl in a Movable Type World

Go ahead… ask me how I spent my weekend…. The short answer: in a designers hell. The long answer: I spent my entire weekend developing FOUR different blogs for 2 different clients – each of these 4 blogs developed and designed in Movable Type 4. And here I thought that old saying went like this: “bad things happen in threes” ?? My dear friends at SixApart – that was sarcasm.. but, really – does the template engine within MT4 have to be so unecessarily complicated? Maybe I’m just simply a spoiled WP Girl? Call me crazy, but I do sorta […]

WordPress For Dummies: The Never Ending Story

When I was approached to write the WordPress For Dummies book back in 2006, I was excited.. and scared. WordPress is a platform that I love…and, even more, I enjoy sharing the joys of WordPress to those who are new to the platform. Whether you’re making the move from another blogging platform to WordPress.. or just starting a blog for the very first time – – people that I work with are always amazed and excited with all the possibilities that WordPress holds for their site. It’s really a phenomenal tool. The fact that it is free — and the […]

Gravatars – or Globally Recognized Avatars

Debbie, who is a relatively recent visitor to my blog, but fast becoming a regular (I *think* she’s even in the process of transferring over to our hosting service as I write this) made a suggestion about making a post here about Gravatars – – claiming she just can’t figure out those darned things!! What is an Avatar?? First, a definition. An avatar, as it relates to this post, is a graphical representation of a person. Usually a small-ish icon that gives a visual identity to a name. You see them in use in bulliten boards, discussion forums, chat rooms.. […]

The Un-Design and 10 Great WordPress Plugins I'm Using

I announced earlier in the week that I was planning a redesign….and I really, really was. Except, for now – I’m not. I’m too indecisive, can’t make up my mind, can’t concentrate on anyone thing with the end result … well, the almost end result, feeling pretty disorganized. My problem is that I don’t have enough time to devote to my own stuff right now and it was feeling too forced, without any good damn reason for the redesign to begin with – – except for the fact that I’m tiring of the lightness of it all. I’ll just have […]
