WordPress Girl in a Movable Type World

Go ahead… ask me how I spent my weekend…. The short answer: in a designers hell. The long answer: I spent my entire weekend developing FOUR different blogs for 2 different clients – each of these 4 blogs developed and designed in Movable Type 4. And here I thought that old saying went like this: “bad things happen in threes” ?? My dear friends at SixApart – that was sarcasm.. but, really – does the template engine within MT4 have to be so unecessarily complicated? Maybe I’m just simply a spoiled WP Girl? Call me crazy, but I do sorta […]

SXSW – See You There?

In 2006, I was fortunate enough to be asked to speak on a discussion panel about blog design at the South by Southwest Interactive ’06 conference (SXSWi). I had great fun and met some really cool people. I, unfortunately, did not make the SXSW conference in 2007. This year, however, I will be attending SXSW Interactive 2008 in March and am fortunate, once again, to be scheduled for a presentation of WordPress For Dummies, followed by a book signing at the SXSW Bookstore on Tuesday March 11th. The time is still to be determined.. if you’re going and are interested, […]

5 Years, and counting

It’s all the rage in the blogosphere to celebrate Blogiversaries. What IS a blogiversary? It’s the anniversary of your blog, of course! Today is my 5th year blogging here at lisasabin-wilson.com. Five years – how old does that make me in blog years? To celebrate – I’m giving away 5 autographed copies of my soon-to-be-released book, WordPress For Dummies. One book for every year I’ve been blogging here. More about that later, though. Actually, I’ve been blogging on this domain much longer than that (more like 8 years), but my archives only go back to October 28, 2002. Why? Back […]

WordPress For Dummies: An Update

At long, long last I have finally finished the WordPress For Dummies project that I’ve been working on since January. All of the edits are in and the book went to layout this week – and I couldn’t be more thrilled or excited! There were a number of challenges to writing this book.. but getting it finished and through the editing process was the biggest. In the final hours, we were all very happy to know that Matt Mullenweg wrote a very nice forward for the book giving a nice snapshot view of the state of WordPress today, including a […]

Sandbox Designs Competition Complete

Awhile ago I posted about the Sandbox Designs Competition that started back in June. The competition is now complete and the winning designs have been announced and displayed. First prize went to Arpit Jacob for SandPress, which is a really sharp and clean theme. Congrats to all the winners of the competition and big kudos to all the designers who participated. The WP community gets to benefit greatly from all of these new and great themes, based on the Sandbox Theme. Congrats to Scott Wallick for running a sane (I think ?) and successful competition, and to the judges who […]

Sandbox Designs Competition

Scott Allan Wallick and Andy Skelton recently announced a competition for creating style sheets for the Sandbox theme for WordPress – The Sandbox Designs Competition For those of you not familiar with The Sandbox – it is a WordPress theme, only naked – leaving you, the creative designing geniuses that you are, to dress it up. Though it is so much MORE than just simply naked – – its pure and gorgeous, in all its semantic glory. A perfect starting point for themers from the novice to the experienced.. and all points in between. Why do I sense the beginning […]

Too many blogs – not enough time in the day! We are filling some serious amounts of design orders over at E.Webscapes – so much so that I am looking for a good designer (or two!) to join our team of talented designers. This is a part-time, work-from-home, position (unless you really WANT an in-office position.. I’ll try and make room for you here in my crowded office space!) […]

Its been a really good week

I’m rounding the bend.. hurtling towards my second deadline, which is due March 1. It will be a solid few days of writing between now and then until I have to start working on my third deadline (March 31.) Someone here told me that this book thing was a GOOD idea — who was it?? *leering* I blame the callouses on my fingertips on you – I hope you feel guilty! Overall, its been a good week. My friend Leanne has had a BANNER week – and I know mine does not compare… but still a good one in the […]

Coffee Break at 9PM

Let’s see.. my day consisted of: Setting up one completed custom WordPress installation and design for a client whose host has some kinda funky PHP settings that took about 3 hours to finally resolve and get the WordPress installation working correctly. (Psst . . for LunarPages folks, if you suffer from the ‘500 Internal Server’ affliction after running a clean install of WordPress and can’t make a post to your site without being locked out completely – chmod folders to 755, chmod PHP files to 644 and then put this in your .htaccess file: SecFilterEngine Off SecFilterScanPOST Off Restoring another […]
