Post-Austin Blues

I‘m not entirely sure what is in the air in Austin – but I’ve come home from Austin with a 102.6 degree fever, a gross cough, congestion, body aches, pains and generally feeling just absolutely awful! It started to crop up a few hours before our panel, and luckily it did not really hit me hard until a few hours after our panel – – but unfortunately, cut my night with Danalynn and her husband, Kyle, short. ๐Ÿ™

Sure, sure – the one night I go out to have fun in MONTHS – I get struck down with some horrid respiratory flu from hell! I feel bad, because they drove all the way down to Austin to see me, and I tried really really hard to hang on as long as I could that night. By the time I got back to the hotel, my fever was raging at 102.6 and I just crashed into the hotel bed and don’t remember a thing afterwards.

The panel went really well. I met up with Paul, Peter, Suzi and Joelle in the ‘green room’ about an hour before the panel. It was really great! All 5 of us hit it off with one another right off the bat – they are all such a great group of people! Peter is very funny and I wish I had the opportunity to spend a bit more time with him because I learned much from him in many things he had to say in the panel. It was super to meet Paul after knowing him online for about 3-4 years! He is just great people! Suzi is another person I wish I could have just had the evening to spend with, she is just a wealth of knowledge and just really super. Joelle is really fantastic! I actually spent most of my time with Joelle – her and I hit it off right off the bat and it was non-stop chatter for the rest of the day/night.

The panel went really well. We had a great audience who asked some really great questions – some that made me think, and possibly re-think my own processes involved in design and running a design company. I came home with some new ideas – and different perspectives, which is really the reason for going to these things, right? I was really nervous for the first 5 minutes, but after that – it was easy to relax and just have fun with it.

Afterwards, we all went out to dinner where I had the chance to get to know all of these great people a bit better. Joelle and Mike and I made our way through these monstrous ribs and chattered the night away.

Afterwards, after a little trouble of actually connecting – Danalynn, her husband Kyle, Joelle, Mike and I headed out to a bar in Austin called “The Water Hole” where we had mediocre beer and karaoke. Both Danalynn and Joelle can SING, man! Not too mention Kyle — that man has a set of pipes on him! I didn’t even attempt the microphone at all – – the respiratory flu that now plagues me was creeping up fast — I tried to hang on as long as I could, but by about 11:30 I was ready to die. I made the unfortunate announcement that I had to get back to the hotel – – and Kyle graciously made a stop at Walgreen’s on the way so that I could pick up some cold medicine that would hopefully make me feel better. I forgot to buy tissues for my running nose, but Mike was nice enough to share a pack of his travel hankies. Thanks Mike!

Overall – the conference was great! I’ll post more later about some of the panels that I attended. And I’ll try to find the link to the pod cast of our own panel – – if you happen to hear it, don’t laugh! For the first few minutes my voice was a little shaky – which totally exposed my nerves in those first five minutes. Now that it’s over? I would totally do something like this again – – in a heartbeat!

For now – I’m going to go back to nursing my flu. I’m still running a fever — but it’s down to about 101.4 – my head is exploding, my body hurts everywhere, my cough is very colorful and I want to hunt down the person in Austin that I got this from! Grr!

Coming up: Pictures of our panel, karaoke night, Joelle & Lisa and the Podcast Pickle, and last but not least, the rib that ate Manhattan!

  1. It was so great to meet you! I was going to call you when we got home to see if you were feeling any better. Looks like the fever went up since our jaunt to Walgreens, huh? ๐Ÿ™

We’ll definitely have to get together again. I had a great time! Can’t wait to see the Pickle pic. lol.

    Feel better soon!

(p.s. our link is wrong. hehe.)

  2. Oops – I fixed your link *blaming the fever*

Yea, things got worse after I dropped you guys off on the eleventh floor. I seriously barely remember my flight home – I think I was just delirious! I got home and downed 2 shots of Nyquil and was out until this morning. Nyquil rocks!

I told Chris that the next time we’re in SD (which we sometimes are, for his biz) – that we’d have to take you and Mike out for dinner. I had a really great time, too!

  3. Holy crap! You should have told us you wanted to leave earlier. Seriously, I feel really, really bad for keeping you out while you were sick!

All things considered, I still had a great time. And so did Kyle…after her got over the whole circling around the block for 30 minutes thing. lol. If fact, now he’s got this idea in his head that we can take road trips like that once a month or something.

    I think he’s on crack. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Truthfully, I totally should have gone earlier than I did – – but I was trying really hard to ignore it LOL – – it wasn’t working very well! After making Kyle circle around the hotel for 30 minutes.. I wanted to make it at least worthwhile for you guys to come down to Austin! I thought, maybe if I drank enough beer – – I could ignore the stupid flu for a few more hours lol

    Stupid me!

I hope we get the opportunity to do this again– when I’m all healthy n’ shit ๐Ÿ˜‰

Tell Kyle I said THANKS for everything! and I think a road trip like that every once in awhile sounds like a great idea — you guys should! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I’ll bet you caught that nasty fever/flu thing from all the canned air you breathed in on the airplane. Nasty germ cannisters. Bleahck.

I’m glad you had a good time, though. ๐Ÿ™‚

    (hug) Feel better soon.
