Portrait of Me as a Scuba Diver

When we were planning our honeymoon to Bonaire – the biggest factor involved in the decision to go there was Chris and his past experiences with the island. He’d been about 4-5 times before. The island is known for it’s diving. As a matter of fact, Bonaire is one of the premire dive locations in the Caribbean. Problem? Neither one of us were certified as scuba divers. When Chris travelled to Bonaire, he snorkled, but never dove. Me? I’ve never really had an interest in scuba diving – – I guess it’s just something that never occurred to me. Once […]

Long Live Juan Valdez!

I was notified of this via email from my friend, Tom. It’s a sad, sad day for coffee lovers everywhere: ‘Juan Valdez’ Is Hanging Up His Poncho BOGOTA, Colombia (May 31) – Juan Valdez is retiring. Long live Juan Valdez! The ambassador to the world for Colombian coffee, Carlos Sanchez, is hanging up his trademark poncho after four decades of playing the role of “Juan Valdez.” Now the national federation of Colombian coffee producers, owners of the Juan Valdez trademark, is searching for a man to inherit that poncho. Sanchez and his trusty mule Conchita have promoted Colombian coffee since […]

Garden Update

I‘m happy to make an update on my gardening efforts and state that I haven’t killed anything yet! This is incredible news – seeing as how I have a reputation that is hard to live down within my immediate family. Sheesh! A girl gets lazy with her garden for ONE SEASON – – things croak off – – and the family will never let me forget it (read: last year I was too busy to tend to my garden and started it off with really good intentions – – but sadly most things died). This year, even with the crappy […]

Emergency 911-XL

Being a health care worker, I am completely 100% behind this type of service: A Las Vegas company is putting a new extra-large ambulance into service to handle extra-large patients. American Medical Response called the $250,000 rig its bariatric unit. It bought it at the request of the Clark County Fire Department. The vehicle looks like a regular ambulance. But it’s extra-wide, and has a larger gurney, a winch and ramps capable of loading up to 1,600 pounds. A company official said that in the last six months, AMR has handled 75 calls involving patients that weighed more than 600 […]

Subscription Spam

Ok – so last night I upgraded my comment subscription plugin to the newest version. Apparently, I had the “subscribe to comments box checked by default” option checked and everyone has been getting emails anytime anyone comments on a post that you’ve participated in. It wasn’t my intention to spam you with the comment subscription – so now it’s set to ‘off’ so you can choose whether you want those notification emails or not. You can go here to cancel any current subscriptions you may have – Sorry!

Back to Good

I‘m afraid to say it. . but I think things are slowly approaching normalcy around here. Mom seems to be out of the woods.. knock on wood, and all that. It’s been a pretty hairy past few weeks, but I’m thinking that perhaps I can breath easy. Man, I really hate to say that. But that is the way it seems, at any rate. My long lost friend has been found. I can remove his picture off all the milk cartons now, and call off the National Guard. He has sufficiently apologized for dropping out of life – – but […]

Baklava in New York… Anyone?

Any NY’rs out there who would be able to give me a referral to the absolute BEST bakalava in the city?? We’re having a wedding cake done by Cupcake Cafe — but Chris, and a few others, are real Baklava fans . . . and after talking him out of having a full blown Baklava cake (not sure how that would be)… we compromised on a nice wedding cake, and a big tray full of baklava on the side. I found a TON of places on the net for bakeries in NYC that make baklava – – and have narrowed […]

Through The Woods

Boy, my little blog has just been a bedrock of bad news this week, huh? Starting the week off with a good note – Mom had her surgery yesterday and pulled through with flying colors. Ignoring the tales she was telling me about the marching bands in the hallway of the hospital always knocking the pulse oximeter off her finger, everything else was normal. I guess those drugs are real good stuff, eh? She is in zero pain for the first time in more than month. The color is returning to her toes and feet and the tests they’ve run […]
