Outsource-XP

In preparing my machine for a reformat and rebuild – I am, of course, backing up everything. If anyone using Outlook 2003 has tried the import/export of your accounts, rules, sigs and general settings – you know that it’s not as easy as it was in previous versions of Outlook. During a search I was doing to optimize my back up in XP Pro 2002 – I stumbled across a nice little piece of shareware offered by PC World called “Outsource-XP”. It creates backups of your Outlook 2002 / 2003 files, settings, and eMail account settings. Additionally, OutSource-XP can create […]

Love/Hate

I have a well defined love/hate relationship with my computer. On one hand, I love the thing. It’s my greatest hobby from talking with my friends online, keeping in touch with family and friends via email, running my business, keeping me organized and teaching me new things. On the other hand – it’s the dependence issue, so when things go wrong . . I begin to really realize how very dependent I am upon this machine. It’s a bit disconcerting. I have a great set up. Chris set me up with a very kick ass machine for Christmas last year […]

More on the Spam Monster

Well, yesterday, I got over 3000+ pieces of spam from that little monster. He has program that is automated to just keep hitting your wp-comments-post.php every 2-3 seconds, dropping the email in. WordPress has great comment spam protection – – however, it moderates the spam, which is great when it’s someone dropping one or two spam comments. But, when you have someone who is using a program like Python to automate the spam, bypass the front door of your site and hit the comment post function directly ever 2 seconds and it results in thousands of spam – – it […]

Spam Monster

I found a little monster in my email box today. He’s spamming my blog. Apparently these guys have gotten wise to the WordPress way of comment spam control and know that the default number of URLs allowed before it’s moderated for spam purposes is 5. You can set it lower in Options/Discussion and scrolling to the bottom. Another thing you can do is cut and paste this list into your spam moderation box (beneath the area where you configure the # of URLs) and it will moderate out the addressed spammers. I’ve put it together for you to download here […]

Michael has his new domain up and he’s made the change over to WordPress! His template converted perfectly – – WordPress SO rocks. Suzi’s 2 blogs have been sucessfully converted from MT to WordPress at Diary Date and at Spyware Warrior – – both templates converted beautifuly. Did I mention that WordPress rocks??

For Mog, With Love.

ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application. The program installs as a new button in the IE […]

Microsoft SQL

I”m in the process of dragging myself to a very comfortable working level with MicroSoft SQL. I have a few SAM’S E-Books that I’m going through, as well as a couple of interactive, computer-based teaching tools and Learnkeys. If anyone has any online references that they like and have found helpful – please share? I realize I’ll probably learn the most by opening the program and breaking it down that way – – that’s how I’ve ever learned how to use certain programs. However, I’d like to find a few really good references to help me a long the way. […]

GMail Woes

A while back, I posted concerns I had regarding GMail, Google’s web mail service. I never did get an account, deciding that I already have enough space and bandwidth in my own domain mail, there was absolutely no need to obtain one – – so I never jumped on the GMail bandwagon. Back then, I had privacy concerns that revolved around targeted email marketing/spam – – Googlebots spidering through my email messages looking for keywords that would enable advertisers to target their products to me, based on what keywords they found in my incoming and outgoing mail. Seems there are […]

Someone please just shoot me!

Still in training. I’m sitting here doing XML compliant coding samples. What are you doing with your Sunday afternoon?

Gmail Hype

So far, I’ve been offered Gmail accounts by 6 different people. What’s the hype, really? I have my domain mail. If my domain happens to go down for whatever reason – I have my main email account provided through my cable provider. Is it the space that Gmail offers? I understand it offers 1 Gig of space for email – – are people actually storing that much email out there? I have four 80 Gig drives on my machine – – and about another 400 Gig available to me on our home network…what would I need a lousy gig of […]
