Geeky Things

Geek of The Week

Hey, what do ya know – I am the ‘Geek of the Week’ over at ServerBeach. Months ago, they asked me for my bio and information and then I promptly forgot all about it. Today, Angela Ramirez of ServerBeach wrote to let me know that I’m their geek this week. Heh. I remember, in high school, it was so not cool to be referred to as a geek. Is this something to put on my resume, ya think? haha ServerBeach, for those following along at home, is our upstream provider for Blogs About Hosting. We’ve been with them for about […]

C:/WINDOWS/UPDATE

What started out as an innocent project has taken all weekend, and is still continuing as we speak – – or as I type. Very long story short….I purchased a new computer last week. When we purchase new computer systems in this house – we don’t run out and buy a Dell system, or anything like that. We purchase each component seperately and then piece it together on the floor of my office. So, yea – I picked up a new motherboard, CPU, cooling system, RAM, Video card, Hard drives, monitor, new case – the whole thing. First came the […]

For the love of CSS

Within the past few months.. well, really, since I announced that I would be writing WordPress for Dummies – my site, my work…I have recieved a bit more attention than I usually do. Anyone who knows me understands that I’m a pretty private individual…I’m not used to the spotlight — I can function in it, but don’t have a comfort level there. A little extra attention due to the release of my book is to be expected though, hey? Though, I simply do what I do.. my work makes me happy, but I’m not all that unique, in the grand […]

I Miss the Noise

Seeing the title of this post, you’d think it was a follow up to my last post. Noise appears to be my topic du jour. Again, this time it is the lack of noise in regards to my brand new keyboard. See, I buy keyboards like some people buy milk. Regularly. I’m a spiller. Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m a spiller (Hiiiiii, Lisaaaaaa) I spill all sorts of stuff on my keyboards. Mainly, coffee. I’ve been known to spill water, soda, milk, tea and once, I even dumped a burning candle over and covered my keys in melted […]

WordPress for Dummies

I am happy and utterly excited to announce that I am writing the official WordPress For Dummies book for Wiley Publishing! At first, my feelings were mixed. On one hand, I’m thrilled to be able to write about a topic that I both enjoy, and am very passionate about. In addition, it does feel rather good to be recognized, on such a level, for the work I have done with WordPress. On the other hand – – I’m saying to myself – “What on earth have I gotten myself into???” Can I really do this? I’ve never written a book before. Me? An author?

Stupidity on the Net

So, we sent a DMCA notice to some folks who run bloghostings.com yesterday. This is how stupid some people really are – – they see something they like on the ‘net, decide they want it, completely rip it and put it up on their own site, yet they don’t bother changing the links in the content they’ve blatantly copied. Someone clicks the link – – ends up on my site. My referral stats show the incoming link – I go look and find that these yahoos have completely ripped our hosting site word for word. Boys and Girls – if […]

Coffee Break at 9PM

Let’s see.. my day consisted of: Setting up one completed custom WordPress installation and design for a client whose host has some kinda funky PHP settings that took about 3 hours to finally resolve and get the WordPress installation working correctly. (Psst . . for LunarPages folks, if you suffer from the ‘500 Internal Server’ affliction after running a clean install of WordPress and can’t make a post to your site without being locked out completely – chmod folders to 755, chmod PHP files to 644 and then put this in your .htaccess file: SecFilterEngine Off SecFilterScanPOST Off Restoring another […]

Oh I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker ..

..In 77 and 69 revolution was in the air I was born too late and to a world that doesn’t care Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair….. Ok, so if you haven’t actually HEARD the song.. you think I’m nuts right about now, eh? Ok – maybe you thought I was nuts to begin with. That works, too. If you’re curious at all – you can watch it: Sandi Thorn – I Wish I was a Punk Rocker That song has been running through my grey matter for the past 3 days solid […]

XOXO – Love, Microsoft

Firefox 2.0 was released this week featuring a refined user experience and a great many new developer features. The fine (and envious) folks from Redmond, WA (aka – Microsoft) sent the Mozilla developers a cake, congratulating them on the release of 2.0. Maybe the Mozilla folks will be so flattered by the present of a cake – they’ll return the favor by sending Microsoft instructions on how to build a browser? Just a suggestion. Now, the Mozilla folks can have their cake – – and eat it too!

Clearing Out The Garage

commodore 1541 disk driveWe spent some time this weekends clearing out some junk out of our garage. It was time – – we’ve accumulated tons of stuff… most of it useless. Chris and I are both serious pack rats – for whatever reason, we both have a difficult time letting go of the trinkets that make up our own personal history – a/k/a our baggage.
