Custom Development Query – the quest for perfect blog toast

I bet you thought, based on the title, it was going to be about database queries. No, actually, this is a query – as in a question. I already have my own opinions on this one – – but I’m curious as to the perspectives of others out here. This question was actually from a reader of my book, WordPress For Dummies and the question raised because of a recommendation I had made in hiring outside developers to work on your blog. I believe it’s important to prioritize your needs, based on your skills and capabilities. If you’re spending more […]

The Un-Design and 10 Great WordPress Plugins I'm Using

I announced earlier in the week that I was planning a redesign….and I really, really was. Except, for now – I’m not. I’m too indecisive, can’t make up my mind, can’t concentrate on anyone thing with the end result … well, the almost end result, feeling pretty disorganized. My problem is that I don’t have enough time to devote to my own stuff right now and it was feeling too forced, without any good damn reason for the redesign to begin with – – except for the fact that I’m tiring of the lightness of it all. I’ll just have […]

WordPress Girl

There are reasons people know me as a WordPress Designer – other than the fact that I’ve written the book on it. I’ve been developing/designing WordPress sites since 2003 – – and I think in blog time, that’s almost ancient. Occasionally, however, I do get requests for designs on different platforms (like Movable Type, Typepad, Blogger, etc). Rarely – – and I do mean very rarely, I get an order for an Expression Engine site. I think in the 5 years I’ve been doing this – I can count on one hand how many orders I get for Expression Engine […]

Early Blogging

I’m blogging early . . or late, depending on how you look at it. It’s 6:30 am and I’ve yet to sleep. So, is it early…or is it late? I report – you decide. I had a nice time at BlogHER. Chicago is always fun to visit – if it’s possible to be in love with a city (and it IS), Chicago would be my second love. Seattle is my first (sorry Chicago!). I love the design of the city, the architecture..the lake. I just like big cities, overall — there’s such a nice feeling of being just a number, […]

Quick Update

Just a quickie today . . I’m pressed (shoved? smashed?) against some hard deadlines today. Coffee.. coffee and MORE coffee please! Last week, I mentioned a radio interview that I did on SRD Radio with my good friend, Dave Chadwick. Dave has the episode up and live today so you can go and listen and gawk at what a dork I sound like in audio. Be nice, though – I was nervous! Here is a rundown of Dave’s show for this week: I talk about how I gained 50 pounds in 5 years and how I intend to lose it […]

SixApart Creates Buzz

It was all over the place yesterday, in case you missed it – here’s a bit of a blog round up on the release of MT 4 Beta – along with the announcement that they will release it as Open Source under a GPL license later this year – and the emergence of the MTOS (Movable Type Open Source) Community: Paul Enderson wrote Movable Type Goes Open Source – “Ironically enough, up until the release of MT 3.0 many users treated the software as open-source – despite the fact that it wasn’t official. When SixApart decided to enforce the licence […]

Stupid Coding Bloopers

Sometimes when I’m coding and working on designs, my brain goes on auto-pilot and I make some of the weirdest errors in my code, without even knowing it – causing me to load the design I’m working on and then say…”WTF??” when it doesn’t work the way I think it should. I go back and look at my code and I see some pretty silly stuff that tells me I need to pay more attention to what I’m doing. Like what? Well… In a CSS container where I want to define a height and width of an element… the normal […]

Transfer First … Cancel Second

Just a little tip. . . If you host your website with a hosting provider and you want to transfer to a new hosting provider – please do the following, in order: Back up your data and transfer from your current host to your new host Cancel your hosting account with your current host. If you do not do it in that order – you run the risk of losing your data. If you cancel first and then try to transfer after – you may find that your current web host did exactly what you asked them to do – […]

Backlogged..just a little bit

It’s amazing what one full week of being down with a serious cold/flu can do to a persons productivity – oy! It’s lots of coffee and late, late nights for me for the next several days just to catch up to where I need to be. I’m currently working on a WordPress MU site design and setup for a client of mine. I’m pretty excited about it because this is really the first WordPress MU site development that I’ve done for a client. I’ve toyed with MU quite a lot in the past, but nothing too serious. And, of course, […]

Who Took My Hal.DLL ?

I was looking forward to a nice, relaxing weekend. In efforts to decrease my stress levels – I was planning on spending the entire weekend planting and fussing with pretty things in the new flower bed that I built a few weeks ago. (I’m still holding off until Memorial Day Weekend to plant anything in the veggie garden — in Wisconsin, you cannot be 100% sure winter is over until the end of May). As my workday on Friday wound down to an end – I rebooted my computer. That was my first mistake – – but it was running […]
