Geeky Things

A little planned time out

We are making preparations to travel to Las Vegas next week to attend Blog World Expo. Looking forward to running into some old friends, and making new ones – – if you are planning on being there, please let me know! Would love to catch up with you and shake your hand, or share some words over coffee! Chris and I are looking forward to it. We’re staying at the MGM Grand – so hopefully I’ll be able to hang on to my hard earned money while I’m there (cha ching!). Chris and I fly outta here on Thursday, Sept […]

Sync Outlook Calendar with Google Calendar

I switched from Microsoft’s Outlook to Mozilla’s Thunderbird for email handling about 8 months ago. Why? Curiosity, I guess – – nothing more, really. In those 8 months, Thunderbird crashed a total of 4 times – and each time, I had to spend a considerable amount of time rebuilding my email. Earlier this week, I had a complete system crash and ended up rebuilding my entire PC from scratch. I had backed up my Thunderbird files using MozBackUp – however, when I went to restore those backed up files after rebuilding .. everything was gone. *Poof* I took this opportunity […]

FreshBooks and Other Tools I Use

It was about a year ago that I started hearing about colleagues of mine using FreshBooks for their invoicing and time tracking needs. At the time, I wasn’t ready to move away from my tried and true practice of manual invoicing per project. Hey, I’m a creature of habit and it’s what I knew, and was comfortable with, at the time. I am an early adopter of some things…but not all. I started using FreshBooks a little over a month ago and I just can’t even begin to describe how excellent this service is and how much time it has […]

Web414 – Milwaukee's Web Community

I’m really excited to have been asked to speak at a local web development/design group in Milwaukee this June. The group is called Web414 – Milwaukee’s Web Development Community, and from what I understand – it’s a group of Drupal fans, mostly – – though Mike tells me that they all appreciate WordPress. (Or maybe he just said that to make me feel more at ease??). The group is made up of mostly developers, with a smattering of designers here and there in the crowd and when I talked to Mike about what topic would be best for this crowd […]

Shall We Play a Game?

Anyone with a bit of age on ’em may read that title and in their head hear Joshua saying it in that menacing, computerized voice that I will forever associate with Global Thermonuclear War and complete annihilation of the world. By now, you’re thinking… “What IS she rambling on about??” This weekend, Chris and I reached new levels of geek when we decided to dig out our copy of War Games – a movie released in 1983 starring (a VERY young) Matthew Broderick. It was one of the first mainstream cybercrime, cyberterrorism flicks to hit the scene. Basically, the kid, […]

Bound for Austin – SXSW Here I Come

There have been many forces in the universe conspiring against my ability to make it to SXSW Interactive in Austin this year. But! I’ve emerged victorious at the 11th hour and will be hopping that plane at 7:40am tomorrow morning and winging my way to Austin for 5 days of geek-infused fun, not too mention warm weather. Make no mistake – this is a business trip for me… and work has NEVER been so much fun! My tentative schedule for the 5-day event includes: Friday, March 7 Arriving in Austin and checking into my hotel at the Four Seasons around […]

Believe it or not.. I am still alive

It’s been kind of nuts over the past 2 weeks, hence the lack of updates here. I’ve been getting ready for my 5-day trip to Austin, TX for the SXSWi Conference. I leave very very early on Friday morning and will be returning home on Tuesday evening. Much needed to be done before my departure, which leaves absolutely zero time for blogging, of course! I will be working from Austin during my down time (if any clients are reading this – no worries, please! Austin is wired and I’ll be hooked in) – and avail. by email, of course. Most […]

Would You Misplace the Deed to Your House?

How about the title to your car? Important documents like house deeds, car titles, mortgage papers.. these are important documents that we keep in safe places. Some people even go as far as placing them in fire safes or safety deposit boxes to make sure nothing happens to them… they are THAT important! Let’s apply that concept to your home on the web. Ask yourself this: If I needed to access my domain registration account right this minute – am I able to? Surprisingly, for many, the answer to that question is : NO. Why? I’ve heard various responses: I […]

SXSW – See You There?

In 2006, I was fortunate enough to be asked to speak on a discussion panel about blog design at the South by Southwest Interactive ’06 conference (SXSWi). I had great fun and met some really cool people. I, unfortunately, did not make the SXSW conference in 2007. This year, however, I will be attending SXSW Interactive 2008 in March and am fortunate, once again, to be scheduled for a presentation of WordPress For Dummies, followed by a book signing at the SXSW Bookstore on Tuesday March 11th. The time is still to be determined.. if you’re going and are interested, […]
