Geeky Things

A Very Bose Christmas

My ears lost their innocence in 1990. I used to be a person who was just happy listening to music on whatever medium was available – – the car radio, my home stereo system, the loudspeakers at the mall – it didn’t really matter to me.  Although, I am a musician – and a classically trained one at that – my ear was never really very picky when it came to consuming music for my entertainment.   My ear only seemed to be MY worst critic, not anyone else’s.  That is until 1989, when I married a true audiophile geek.  If […]

WordCamp NYC, BuddyPress & Me!

I’m really excited about the opportunity to speak at WordCamp NYC – At 9:15 am Saturday morning – November 14 – I will take the stage and talk about growing communities with BuddyPress. This presentation will take a look at the features BuddyPress currently offers to help you grow your own community on your web site, including some tips and tricks I’ve come across along the way to help de-mystify the BuddyPress themes and templates to help you on your way to customizing your own BuddyPress community site.

Out From Under . .

Seriously, I haven’t updated this site since JULY – almost 4 months ago. I’m surprised I still have subscribers and that you are still here reading this .. but thank you for sticking around! So much as been going on since I last updated here, I don’t even know where to begin. Maybe if I just blank out the last 4 months and start over and pretend like some of this stuff never happened…would you still love me in the morning?

WordPress 2.8 Goodness

I’ve been using 2.8 beta since it’s release and upgraded this evening to 2.8 (Baker) this evening and nothing broke – that is always a bonus! Loving the upgrades to the WordPress platform and how everything is pretty much automated for users – – now not only can you upgrade your WordPress installation directly from your Dashboard AND search for, install and activate new plugins (and upgrade existing ones) directly from your WordPress Dashboard – but you can do the same with free WordPress Themes from the official themes directory. A true WordPress Trifecta – it’s brilliant. I’m going through […]

SXSW Craziness!

I’ve been spending the past 2 weeks preparing for my trip to the SXSW Interactive Festival in Austin, TX. This will be my third trip down to Austin for SXSW and I’m really looking forward to attending this year. Normally, there’s always a great deal to do before I take off for 5 days to attend the biggest geek gathering ever! I normally work long hours to make sure that all my client projects are either done, or well on their way to done and make sure everything I need on my home PC is set up for remote access, etc, etc. THIS year, however – it’s been a bit more crazy than usual because I’ve been working on developing five (5) premium WordPress themes that will be released at SXSW at the ServerBeach exhibit booth..

ServerBeach at SXSW

ServerBeach at SXSW with Lisa Sabin-Wilson, author of WordPress For Dummies

I’m really excited to announce that I am keeping myself busy at SXSW Interactive 2009 by appearing at the ServerBeach exhibit booth in the Exhibit Hall March 13 – 15, 2009 in Austin Texas…

Meanwhile…back at the ranch…(long-ish)

I have been ever so slightly *MIA* here, I realize. This is due to several reasons – – some personal – – others just involve lots of work and lots of catching up on work! I do have lots going on, though – so let me get right to it with information about a recent interview, my appearance at the SXSW Interactive Festival, some WordCamp Chicago updates, and some great tid bits about WordPress for Dummies, 2nd Edition – – including the winners of my previously mentioned autographed book giveaway. . .

Saying goodbye to 2008

I loved 2008…and I hated it. Professionally, it was really a phenomenal year. E.Webscapes did 409 projects in 2008 – that’s more than a project a day. It’s almost exactly double what we did in 2007 – and the profit margins tripled. I also finished another book in 2008 and have another (different) one in the works for 2009 (more about that another day!) I would have to say that professionally speaking, 2008 was my most productive year, to date, since I quit my nursing job and became self-employed back in 2004. I’m pretty proud of that – and proud […]

BuddyPress

As this week is winding down, I’m feeling like I’ve finally come in from the rain (or the snow, since I’m in Wisconsin). Work has been crazy nuts over the past two weeks and I’ve been pushing myself harder than usual to meet deadlines and get things done. Some of it goes rather smoothly, while other bits are somewhat of a struggle, but at the end of the day – it comes together nicely. Speaking of something that has come together nicely – have you hear of BuddyPress? I discovered BuddyPress back in July of this year when a new […]

WordPress 2.7 goes gold

It’s out! The much anticipated 2.7 release of WordPress is officially released into the wild. Just want to give a quick and very heartfelt thanks to Matt for this statement on the WordPress Blog announcement of 2.7: The Future Those of you following along at home might have noticed this was our second major redesign of WordPress this year. Whoa nelly! While that wasn’t ideal, and I especially sympathize with those of you creating books or tutorials around WordPress, there’s good news. The changes to WordPress in 2.5 and 2.7 were necessary for us to break free of much of […]
