Found over at Morgan’s (the girl with the perfect lips) – – I followed a link over to Living Room about the Blogger Idol activity. Kinda coolish thing to do – so I figured I’d join in the fun, in addition – it will give me a little extra something to blog about when I’m running out of things for my fingers to do.
This week’s Blogging Idol Topic: The 80’s.
So, I’m thinking about an entry to do about the 80’s. Shouldn’t be that hard – – those were my high school years – – well, at least 1984 – 1986 were. ‘m thinking music, fashion trends( *scream* ), friends, high school – – and all those are probably all being done by the Blogger Idol participants. So I figured I’d do some of what interests me most in life – – Political news highlights from the 1980’s:
New York Times: In Yugoslavia, Rising Ethnic Strife Brings Fears of Worse Civil Conflict – November 1, 1987
Margaret Thatcher swept to power in 1979; in 1984 the cabinet survived the IRA bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton.
Tiananmen Square, 1989 – The Declassified History
Ronald Reagan shot by John Hinkley on March 30, 1981.
52 American Hostages Released after more than a year of captivity under the regime of the Ayatollah Khomeini.
Princess Grace of Monaco died after suffering a stroke right before her car veered off a cliff in 1982.
The Vietnam Memorial was erected in 1982.
Reagan re-elected in a landslide election, Walter Mondale was never
thought ofheard from again. In 1984 Reagan makes famous joke: “My fellow Americans, I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” He supposedly didn’t know the mic was on.
Michael Dukakis loses to George Bush in 1988 – Dukakis is never
thought ofheard from again.August 1988 saw the End of the Iran-Iraq war – – it ended in ceasefire.
November 9, 1989, brought the fall of the Berlin Wall
1989 also brought us the Exxon Valdez oil disaster
Whew! There’s so much more news from the 80’s – – but my bloggin’ finger is sore!
great post – I hadn’t thought of that approach – very innovative.
Btw – you have a great blog here – I love the design. Blog on!
Thanks, Darren – – Great idea that Blogging Idol is!
Greetings from a fellow “Idol”! :^) Great post, great blog design, and it’s good to see the Bush button in your sidebar. I may “borrow” that for my blog! (With permission, of course.)
Hey there Debi! The Bush button is free for the taking – – it’s not mine, I got it over on the Bush site. If click the button – they have a variety of them to choose from ๐
Greetings back at ‘cha!

Hi, love your post – I can’t believe I remember some of this (I was 3-13 and not into politics back then!)
Hi Tanya – and thanks. It’s amazing what sticks in your head as a kid, and you don’t even know it until someone blogs about it 15 years later, eh?
