The Bourne Obsession

lsw-x

I must have been 18 when I read my very first Robert Ludlum book, The Scarlatti Inheritance – first published in 1971. My dad had this huge bookcase full of books and one entire row of them were made up of Robert Ludlum books. I started from the left and worked my way to the right – reading them all.

The Bourne Ultimatum, Matt Damon, Robert LudlumI loved the Bourne series… The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Legacy. I devoured those books back then. My feelings were mixed when they started making the Bourne movies. You know how Hollywood never really does justice to the original works? I held such fond memories of the Bourne series – I wasn’t sure at first that I would actually see the movies. Well.. I have. Tonight, we just returned from seeing The Bourne Ultimatum at the theater and I’m not unhappy that I did.

When they made the first movie, I thought Matt Damon was an unlikely Jason Bourne and was pleasantly surprised after the first film, and have remained so throughout the next two. I won’t spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it (or read the book) – but this one definitely does not dissapoint! I really like Matt Daemon as Jason Bourne – – Such a baby face, wholesome looking guy…it’s always such a surprise when he pops someone off – – even though you know the story line and know perfectly well what Jason Bourne is capable of. Good flick and a nice way to spend a few hours on a Friday night.

  1. I liked the books and have enjoyed the films, though any resemblance in plot lines have long disappeared, in most cases probably due to the shifting political scene.
One thing I didn’t like about Robert Ludlum’s writing style, ALL THE SHOUTING! 😉

  2. Yea, well considering the books were written in the ’80s – the political landscape has changed somewhat since then, I suppose they had to update the story a bit.

  3. The Bourne movie series is the most exciting series Ive see. It beats Mission Impossible by a landslide. Even though those movies aren’t really in the same category I have to compare it to something with action. Bourne is a believable story line unlike Mission Impossible. A series like this has never been perfected on the movie screen. Bourne chocked the competition. Go see Bourne Ultimatum! I cant wait to find out if Bourne Legacy is coming out.

  4. Chad, I heard a nasty rumor that Matt Damon said he wasn’t planning on doing anymore Bourne movies. I would hope that means they aren’t planning to do The Bourne Legacy – – a Bourne movie w/o Damon? Forget about it!
